Outdoor Wednesday 005: Meak Bochea

This photo was taken last month during the Meak Bokchea, a little known holiday but considered a key holiday in the Buddhist calendar. Meak Bochea is the day that the spiritual leader Gautam Buddha announced his future – his death and its accompanying nirvana in which he would enter.

As it is a public holiday, all government offices and agencies as well as some private establishments are closed as faithful Cambodians flock to the wats (temples) all over the country to pray and offer food to the monks.

A typical Buddhist wat with its ornately archway.
