The heat is on!

Buenas noches, amigos y amigas.

I’m still here, surviving the sweltering, boiling summer heat of Phnom Penh. Summer is at its height and along with the summer heat comes the frequent powercuts. Daily. Well, I do acknowledge that I live in a developing country and power cuts at this time of the year is quite understandable, if not expected. However, I wish that the power supply company, aka the Electricite du Cambodge, be kind enough to issue a power interruption schedule of sorts so that us consumers can plan ahead and make arrangements. I myself work at home and my only lifeline to my employers is the Internet. Without power, I am left without nothing.

Amigos y amigas, you cannot imagine how hot it is here. We are sweating like tennis players, I kid you not. Once we had a power cut that started in the wee hours of the night, our pillows were soaking wet that I and my husband had to use my yoga bolsters instead. Yes, it’s that bad.

Speaking about tennis… my boy Rafael Nadal’s recent return to the tennis tour is also generating a lot of heat! That’s good heat, for your information. He’s been absent for nearly 10months due to a knee injury, missing the London Olympics and the US Open. But now that he’s back… well, we his fans couldn’t have asked for a better comeback. Winning the tournaments in Acapulco and Indian Wells! How’s that?

After the Indian Wells tournament in California, Rafa decided to skip the Sony Open in Miami as per his doctor’s advise. He needs to rest his knees in preparation to the most exciting season of all, the clay season on European soil. A little later today, Rafa’s compatriot David Ferrer is going to play against Andy Murray in the men’s final event of the Sony Open. Can Ferru beat Muzzah to win his first ever ATP 1000 title and make history? We’ll find out. Por supuesto, I am rooting for Ferru. Vamos!

But before I go, while Rafa is on vacation, I’ve been watching his past tournaments to fill my Rafa “cravings”. I came across this video of Rafa’s unbelievable gamepoints against his friend Juan Monaco, in their Davis Cup finals match. I can only think of the word “unbelievable” to describe Rafa.

Rafa, without a doubt, is one of the best – if not the best – ball retrievers there is on the tennis planet. If that points didn’t convince you, then you must be a rock.

Dumb ways to die

Dumb ways to die
So many dumb ways to die.
Dumb ways to die-ie-ie
So many dumb ways to die.

My husband looked at me strangely while I was singing these lines today. Actually, I’ve been LSS*ing on this chorus for three days already. The lyrics are part of a campaign jingle launched by the Melbourne Metro Train last week in their efforts to raise awareness about safety in trains.

I watched the video that was shared by a friend in my twitter list several days ago and couldn’t get it out of my head. I laughed out loud at the adorably foolish lyrics of the jingle!

See what I mean? The chorus is so catchy (no fancy Bigsby vibrato effect in the instrumentation) and the animations are super-dooper cute. Cute.But.Violent.  So I think parental guidance is needed, for children below 13, lol. It is a brilliant ad campaign by the Melbourne (Australia) Metro Trains – what can I say, McCann Erickson hit the target with this jingle.  This video ad apparently is part of a larger multi-media compaign that includes radio, giant posters, and a website. This was video was launched only a few days ago and has became viral, already hitting the 4M mark on Youtube. The lyrics are in my head playing over and over. How can I dismiss it? Here goes:

Set fire to your hair
Poke a stick at a grizzly bear
Eat medicine that’s out of date
Use your private parts as piranha bait.

Dumb ways to die,
So many dumb ways to die.
Dumb ways to die-ie-ie,
So many dumb ways to die.

Get your toast with a fork
Do your own electrical work
Teach yourself how to fly
Eat a two-week old unrefrigerated pie.

Dumb ways to die
So many dumb ways to die.
Dumb ways to die-ie-ie,
So many dumb ways to die.

Invite a pyscho-killer inside
Scratch a drug-dealers’s brand new ride
Take your helmet off in outer space
Use a clothes-dryer as hiding place.

Dumb ways to die
So many dumb ways to die.
Dumb ways to die-ie-ie,
So many dumb ways to die.

Keep a rattle snake as pet
Sell both your kidneys on the Internet
Eat a tube of superglue
I wonder what’s this red button do?

Dumb ways to die
So many dumb ways to die.
Dumb ways to die-ie-ie,
So many dumb ways to die.>

Dress up like a moose during hunting season
Disturb a  nest of wasps for no good reason
Stand on the edge of a train station platform
Drive around boom gates at a level crossing
Run across the tracks between the platforms
They may not rhyme, but they are quite possibly…

The dumbest ways to die…
The dumbest ways to die…
The dumbest ways to die-ie-ie…
So many dumb…
So many dumb ways to die…

This post got me thinking… could we have something like this, but instead of singing about the dumbways to die, it describes the dumb ways of driving in Phnom Penh? Just saying.

Tennis cat

Awww, this is cuuuuuute! A black cat, sat very, very close to the television, and watching one of the best finals matches in Australian Open history… Rafael Nadal versus Novak Djokovic, January 29, 2012:

He better be a Rafa fan! Lol.
I just love the way the cat’s head is following the tennis ball’s movement – how cute is that? Is he jealous of the players who get to play with the ball? This cat’s definitely got game! Lol.

When tennis legends were kids

Hey, hey, hey… what’s up everyone?

I’m enjoying my state of idleness this week, hence the lack of posts… well, almost.  I just can’t help but post this funny video of professional tennis stars. I really am curious about my favourite players, Rafael Nadal, for example, and how he was as a kid. Well, I stumbled upon this video, and I tell you… I couldn’t stop laughing.  So while in the middle of an online search for mens designer t shirts (yes, I’m still looking for a birthday pressie for my husband, lol), I took time off just to watch this video. Over and over, lol.

I mean, how adorable are these kids?!?

This ad is from Sweden and was produced as a promotional material for the Stockholm Open 2011.

Watch out for baby Rafael Nadal who is featured as a seven-year old and still very much right-handed. Also not to be missed is baby John McEnroe losing his cool, baby Novak Djokovic’s ball-bouncing, Roger Federer’s tweener-shot, baby Andre Agassi’s mullet hairstyle, and Sweden’s very own baby Robin Soderling’s towel-over-the head moment (priceless and captured Soderling perfectly, hah!). My friend Ana pointed out that it should be Nadal and Soderling in the sequence together – you know – because of that one Wimbledon moment where, while waiting for Rafa to play, Robin went to his bench to change his racket. Anyways… Other players included in the video were Arthur Ashe, Jim Courier, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker and Michael Chang.

Watchitwatchitwatchit!

Kathy Beth Perry’s Friday night

The past few weeks a local cable channel has been repeatedly showing the making and world premier of Katy Perry’s song, “Last Friday Night”. Since then the catchy lyrics as well as the image of the nerdy main character in the music video is stuck in my head.

I got really hooked on it, honestly! The big fuzzy hair, the neon colours, the tight-fitting jeans – so 80s.

The idea of a Katy Perry alter-ego, Kathy Beth Perry, is just funny.  In the music video, the main character is a geeky and gawky teenager with lots of dental problems! If you look at her, she wears teeth-braces and a headgear she is like a walking, talking and singing dental supplies shop. Don’t you think so?  And because of that she is un-popular and un-cool and leads a sad, sad life. But, with the help of a friend, she transformed and dazzled everyone.

Has anyone seen the video? Here it is:

Dorky Steve Nash doing the happy dance

Here’s  a very funny ad of Phoenix Sun’s basketball superstar Steve Nash I found while browsing mindlessly online:

Nash is NBA’s player with the most assists (and the oldest at 37years old).  Not only that he is a basketball royalty, Steve Nash is that he is an advocate of the environment and is a spokesperson for renewable energy programs and conservation efforts in the state of Arizona. What I love about him is that he is so likable. And he is SO game to come out in a funny, dorky ad such as the one I posted above.

In this video ad for a car, it shows him cutting an old woman to grab a parking spot.  This is just too funny watching Nash doing the happy dance! I could not really imagine the Steve Nash, point guard extraordinaire of Phoenix Suns strutting and displaying fancy moves. He has the moves, alright. LOL. Now a thought crossed my mind… if he was wearing hip hop clothes for costume would the ad be even more hilarious? Just a thought. Anyways, watchitwatchitwatchit!!!

Now that’s he’s left the NBA, I wonder what is he going to do next?

Oh, snaaaaap!

Even if I wasn’t posting here, I’ve been following Rafa’s plays in both ATP events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.  I was very satisfied with his performance that, even if he lost two consecutive titles to Novak Djokovic earlier this year, he bounced back  by winning the Monte Carlo and Barcelona titles.

Then came the ATP in Madrid, we all know what happened.  You are still my champion, Rafa. You may have lost to Novak Djokovic in the ATP Madrid finals last Sunday –  yes, in your favourite clay court and in your home turf – but this is one of the greatest shots I’ve seen from you recently. Even the Spanish tennis legend Manolo Santana jumped out of his seat to applaud the crazy shot!

Opening of second set, at 0-30 and second serve for Djoko. A “tweener” lob winner from Rafa! WTH? It became 0-40. With a forehand winner down the line, Rafa breaks at love to start set 2.

I LOLed at this tweet from tennis lust:

tennislust: But of course we don’t expect anything less from whatever comes between Rafa’s legs.

Aye, aye. I so agree!

Now, the ATP tourney is now on in Rome, and Rafa is through to the QFs. I just hope his fever is gone and he’s feeling better to be able to play against Marin Cilic tonight. Winning this means the whole world to Rafa, if he is to keep his number one ranking.

Yo estoy con Rafa. Vamos, Rafa!

Paranormal Dogtivity?

Please indulge me this one time.

You have to see this – another gem of a video from YouTube. I suggest you get yourself a good set of headphones for your maximum listening and viewing pleasure.

Boom-chika-bow-wow-wow!

It’s a good laugh for this evening! The best laugh this week so far. It had me and my husband laughing out loud I had tears ran down my face.   And who wouldn’t? I mean, a romantically-lit bedroom with a Marvin Gaye song in the background… what do you expect to happen on a water bed? Tee-hee-hee.

I was half-expecting something scary would jump out and scare the hell out of me. We laughed even more when we thought the dog was done but instead came back after few minutes for some more action! I could’ve written a better blog post about this dog video if only I could see through my tears!

I shall leave you now as I have this overwhelming urge to change my pillowcases…
